How many enjoy sitting down to a fantastic breakfast? I love breakfast more then any other meal of the day. The only thing that could possibly equal it would be a backyard barbeque with various meats and steaks on the grill.
During my entire working career my wife would be there preparing my breakfast and making sure my lunch was ready for me to take and my clothes always clean and pressed, for that there is no way that I can ever satisfactorily express my thanks and appreciation, without her I would be only half a man, if I was lucky.
On weekends I would try my hand at fixing breakfast for the wife and kids, sometimes the kids would express their gratitude, but they and I were well aware that my preparation fell way behind anything their mother could prepare. My wife always lovingly gave me a thank you with a little smile, sometimes with a bit of a questioning look, as if to say, hmmm, I wonder what this is going to taste like? She always ate everything and told me how good it was.
Whenever we go out for breakfast in a restaurant I always compare their food with hers and tell her how they could take lessons, she always says I'm silly, but I think her cooking is the best, she on the other hand, doesn't like her own cooking, ponder that.
She always cooked different kinds of pastries for me, I’m afraid I have a sweet tooth and the first thing out of bed in the morning I go for my coffee and something sweet. I came home from work one day and the table was full of different kinds of apple pastries she knew I loved to have at breakfast time, damn they were good.
I have been retired now for seven years and when I did I told her that I would try to do a lot more of the cooking. If anyone deserved a brake from the tediousness of daily cooking she does. I have gotten a bit better, but nothing like her. My best thing is making homemade pies and cakes, sometimes bread and baking hams and roasts, through each endeavor I must inquire of my wife if I’m doing it correctly, I will never stop needing her OK.
Still, when I least expect it, she will surprise me with a beautiful breakfast of pancakes or waffles, bacon or sausage, eggs and sometimes home-fries; hmmmm good!!!!! This morning was one of those surprises. I came downstairs and there she was, in the kitchen, surrounded with food. On one plate was a pile of freshly made waffles, liberally buttered the way I like them, a plate full of bacon, a large bowl of fresh strawberries, whipped cream and hot syrup, followed with three fried eggs and of course coffee. When I walked into the kitchen I was bowled over, man oh man, a breakfast fit for a king!!

Comment by Michelle (Avery) Sutton on July 31, 2009 at 12:11pm I love this story Uncle Gordon. Aun Betty is absolutely a wonderful cook, but don't sell yourself short, I still tell people about your awesome chicken salad, and you make some of the best pies I have ever had, Marie Calendars does not hold a candle to you.
Comment by Josie on July 13, 2009 at 12:02am Oh man, Gordon! You are ONE LUCKY man. Plus, I feel that your wife's a very fortunate gal. You both like to help each other out by cooking!
You know if I went out of my way cooking for my hubby, he'd ask me, "OK what did you do, or what do you want?!" Again, you're a lucky man Gordon!
I love big breakfasts too, well, any big meal really! I am so happy you enjoyed your excellent Sunday breakfast
Making a mental note to self.........I can find Gordon's house where it smells like good cooking.........just KIDDING! People who know me well know of my silly, crazy dry humor.
I live in North Salinas, by the way. You don't have to tell me whereabouts you live, Gordon.
My neighbors when I lived in my rental home years ago would cook all the time. There were Mexicans, & boy since I LOVE most kind of foods their kitchen window was right next to our backyard. It smelled great. I can imagine how wonderfully awesome your house smelled when your wife cooked that majestic breakfast for you.
Anyway, I am done...... one of my favorite pastimes are old cars & eating!
